Kaithal: From female foeticide to rape to girls forced into unwanted marriages, incidents that have come to the fore seem to show that India just cannot save its women.
A recent one in Haryana reiterates the same.
In the state’s Kasaan village in Kaithal, a 17-year-old girl was killed by none other than her own father. Her offence? She did not want to live with a 50-year-old man, whom she was forced to marry.
The remorseless father went on record to say that pride is larger than life. “We know that our pride is larger than life,” Indra Singh said.
The girl had apparently gone to the police station to ask for protection but the Panchayat intervened and brought her back.
Before anybody could do anything, the girl was murdered.
The village Panchayat, however, claims that the marriage took place in harmony. “We had only decided that they should come on the 4th and then we will explain to her. The girl denied everything. We have her marriage photos. I was involved in the alliance. Although the girl had initially disagreed but later had changed her mind and the marriage took place in harmony. The panchayat has been insulted,” said the Sarpanch.
The police intervened only when the girl was about to be cremated.
“The body of the girl was lying in her house when we went to file the report. We came to know it was a murder case. We have registered a case and investigations are on. The mamaji has given a statement saying that she was married to man much older. She was not interested in the marriage. We are checking facts,” said Simardeep Singh, Superintendent of Police, Kaithal.

New York Gay Marriage Legalization Transformed National Debate
sixth and by far the largest state to legalize same-sex marriage, following a grueling overtime session in the state Legislature Friday, it immediately transformed the national debate over the issue, legal experts said.
With a population over 19 million — more than the combined population of the five states that currently allow gay marriage, plus the District of Columbia, where it is also legal — New York is poised to provide the most complete picture yet of the legal, social and economic consequences of gay marriage.
“I think that having same-sex marriage in New York will have tremendous moral and political force for the rest of the country — in
part because New York is a large state, and in part because it hasn’t come easily,” said Suzanne Goldberg, a professor at Columbia Law School.
The New York Assembly passed same-sex marriage legislation twice before, in 2007 and 2009, but in both cases it stalled in the state Senate, as it nearly did again this week. The bill passed late Friday after legislators agreed on language allowing religious organizations to refuse to perform services or lend space for same-sex weddings.
The new law’s impact can be measured in part by the numbers at play: New York is home to more than 42,000 same-sex couples, according to an analysis of U.S. census data conducted by the Williams Institute. This means, among other things, that the number of same-sex couples living in states allowing same-sex marriage has more than doubled overnight.

The measure passed the Republican-controlled state Senate by a margin of 33 votes to 29 votes.

Doug Hutchison, a character actor best known for roles in The Green Mile, Lost and The X-Files, married aspiring country singer Courtney Alexis Stodden on May 20 in Las Vegas.
He is 51. She is 16.
Is there something fishy about it? In an exclusive statement to E! News, the couple insists there’s not.
With Stodden, a former beauty pageant queen (she was in the running for Miss Teen Washington USA last year), trying to position herself as a potential Nashville star, you might think there’s more to the story than middle-age actor marrying pretty teenager (and that’s a lot of story, itself). However, the newlyweds tell us they’re just mad about each other.
“We’re aware that our vast age difference is extremely controversial,” the couple said through their spokeswoman.
“But we’re very much in love and want to get the message out there that true love can be ageless.”

Jilted Chinese Bride Suicide (VIDEO)
Chinese college student identified only as Miss Li leaned out from a seventh-story apartment window in China’s Jilin province after her fiancé wed another woman, MSNBC is reporting. Miss Li, 22, had threatened to take her life after her boyfriend of four years broke up with her just before the big day, but she was grabbed by waiting rescuers before she could jump from the ledge, which reportedly stands 80 feet above the ground.
Local community officer Guo Zhongfan, who assisted in the rescue, was modest about his efforts. “I did what anyone would have done,” he told Reuters. Though she did not sustain any injuries in the incident, Miss Li was taken to a hospital.
