Giants catcher Buster Posey suffered a broken bone in his left ankle after a collision at the plate during Wednesday night’s loss to the Florida Marlins.
Wednesday night, the road back to the World Series for the defending champion San Francisco Giants took a dramatic and painful twist.
Scott Cousins scored the go-ahead run in a brutal collision with Posey at home plate in the 12th inning, injuring the Giants star catcher in a 7-6 loss to the Florida Marlins. The Giants said there would be no test results released until Thursday, when he’ll have an MRI exam.
Teammates were still coming to grips with the loss.
“It’s huge. He’s one of the leaders of the team already and what he brings every day is something you can’t replace,” Giants right fielder Nate Schierholtz said. “I’m just hoping for the best. I couldn’t really see what happened from out there. I was just hoping for the best, maybe he got the wind knocked out of him or something.”
Kevin Bieksa(notes) of the Vancouver Canucks was the only person on the ice, at 10:18 of the second overtime of Game 5, who knew where the puck was: Wobbling off his stick and behind the San Jose Sharks’ goalie, winning Game 5 of the Western Conference finals and sending the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994.
Attempting to send the puck deep in the Sharks zone, defenseman Alex Edler instead sent the puck off a stanchion on the glass. It ricocheted to Bieksa, who blasted a knuckleball of a one-timer past Niemi.
“I’ve been here for seven years, and I’ve never seen a puck go off that partition and kick right out like that,” said Bieksa on VERSUS. “I just tried to get enough wood on it to get it to the net.”
Confetti fell as the officials conferred on what had just transpired, but the game was over. The Canucks celebrated as vociferously as the thousands of their fans did inside and outside the arena, clinching the conference finals with a 3-2 victory and a 4-1 series win.
It was an odd goal. But in many ways, it was a surreal goal — especially since it was the 17th anniversary to the day of another double-OT goal that put the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Arctic Circle, that experience periods of time where darkness never comes. The video below captures this in a 24-hour time-lapse that almost looks unreal.
The sun seems to just bob in the sky like a ball bouncing across the heavens, briefly seeming to touch a mountain range before climbing back to its climax.
A full day of sunlight may seem cool at first, but we can imagine it’s quite maddening and confusing to experience this, or even something close to it. In places like Fairbanks, Alaska the sun doesn’t set until after midnight on the vernal equinox, but at least they get some darkness.
Almost three weeks after deadly tornadoes ripped through Alabama, this dog finally returned home. With two broken legs.
Mason, as WAVY-TV 10 refers to the dog, was blown away during the storms. He had been hiding in a garage when the storm picked him up and blew him away on April 27th.
Perhaps most astounding was the extent of Mason’s injuries.
Women’s Tennis Association unrolls its new “Strong is Beautiful Campaign.”
The campaign highlights “athleticism and grace — a unique combination that has turned the stars of the WTA into the most recognizable and followed female athletes on the planet,” according to a WTA statement. The ads, which feature dozens of stars including Wozniacki, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Li Na, were shot by filmmaker Dewey Nicks, who produced a similar series for The New York Times Magazine last year.
In each 30 second shot, a star tennis player delivers not just a ball but also a voice-over storyline. In her clip, Kim Clijsters, whose pregnancy and brief retirement from tennis several years ago generated considerable buzz, rejects the idea she had to compromise now that she is a mother.
“Before I had a baby, I devoted all my time to tennis,” she says as she returns a forehand crouched in a near split. Afterwards, I had to compromise. Now I devote 100 percent of my time to the baby–and 100 percent to tennis.”
